3 Affirmations That Will Change Your Life

We all aspire to live the life of our dreams. But sometimes we’re so busy trying to acquire everything that we think we need, we forget to acknowledge everything that we already have.

No matter where you are in your life, we habitually feel that somehow it could be better. We are always seeking the next best thing. Yet a focus on the future takes our attention away from the present moment.

Affirmations are a great way to ground us in the present moment and to acknowledge what we already have yet also to clearly state our intentions for what we want. Stated aloud they are a form of prayer to our inner Self and to the Universe, sharing our deepest needs and desires. They provide us with a daily reminder to keep moving us towards the life of our dreams.

Affirmations move the focus away from what we believe is lacking and instead focus our attention on what we want to move towards. Metaphysics has taught us that if we focus on the absence of something we want, also described as lack, we will continue to attract the energy of lack towards us. However, if we choose to focus on what we want (rather than its absence), we will attract the item of our desire into our conscious awareness.

Furthermore affirmations remind us of our goals are and the thought process we need to use to get ourselves there. They can dissolve harmful ruminating thoughts that fill our space and replace them with loving intentions of self-fulfillment and growth.

  1. I am grateful. By expressing gratitude, you are choosing to acknowledge all of the wonderful things in your life that you already have. Too many of us are preoccupied trying to find something bigger and better that we become blind to the wonderful life that we are already living.

By affirming I am grateful, you are acknowledging everything you already have and thus opening yourself up to more. You are taking your attention away from lack and are preparing yourself for the next gift the Universe has been waiting to bring you.

  1. I am abundant. Many people associate abundance with financial wealth, however abundance refers to many resources that are we always surrounded by. Abundance can refer to physical items such as family, friends, food, water, or other material items.  Abundance can also refer to non-physical items such as love, joy, peace or spirituality. Have you heard the term ‘rich in love’? Who is to say that being rich in wealth is any better than being rich in love? It is just another form of abundance.

By affirming I am abundant, you are encapsulating all of these different types of abundance and are affirming your wealth in the physical and nonphysical riches that are always available to you.

  1. I am enough. As human beings we tend to develop a belief over time that wherever we are in life and how much we have accomplished is never enough. Positive Psychology states that one of the main causes of our suffering (which manifests itself as anxiety and depression) is social comparison. In today’s world of social media, social comparison is a way of life. We use Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and countless others to share our personal information and in turn to review the lives of others. It is impossible to take part in social media without subsequently using some form of social comparison.

By affirming I am enough, you are satisfying your innate compulsion to be more. You are acknowledging that you are a unique and thus perfect individual and that in itself is enough.

Affirmations are a great way to start your day. In the morning we awaken as a fresh slate, eager to take on the day. Why not use this time to set an intention of what you would like to attract into your life? After you’ve turned off your alarm clock and are taking a few extra seconds before getting out of bed, use this precious time to affirm your goals for the day.

Affirmations remind us that we are in the driver’s seat. You are not merely a cog in a wheel that reacts to life and all of its seemingly random circumstances that are thrown at us. The Rebirth of a Butterfly

You don’t know life until you know death. It’s a bold statement. But if you have experienced a significant loss in your life, you will understand the true depth of it.

I was present for my father’s passing when he took his last breath. I was at his bedside speaking to him, reassuring him that my mom, brother and I would be alright and that we would take care of each other. I told him over and over how much he was loved by so many people and the legacy he would be leaving behind him. I told him even though it was early and he was too young to be experiencing this, it was his time to move on and we had accepted that. Time to leave this illness that had wreaked havoc on his body and had caused him so much pain and suffering. I continued to talk my father through this, being there to hold his hand and support him while he transitioned until he took his last breath and his body became empty, an undeniable vacant shell from which his spirit had moved on from.

There are no words that can fully capture the depth of my experience nor the depth of my new found understanding and perspective of life following this experience.

A clear sunny day is more beautiful than ever before. A quiet night at home with your partner in your arms is unimaginably perfect. You find new depths of unconditional love for your family and close friends as well as gratitude that they are sharing this experience of life with you.

I now have watched someone pass away in front of my eyes. I’ve also experienced that same person come back to check in on me since then. The beautiful consequence of that has been a removal of any fear around death and the dying process. I believe that many people fear death; the finality of it, the termination of an experience here on Earth, the eviction from your body and the involuntary desertion of your loved ones. However once you realize that it is not a death but rather a transition; a piece of a larger puzzle; the continuation of a cycle; you begin to understand that death is no longer something to be feared. It signals the beginning of another experience.

You begin to realize while you’re here in this physical form you’ve been given a gift. You came here to experience love, joy, adventure and discovery for a relatively short period of time. You came here to be you and express your individuality and uniqueness. To give love and be loved. In summary, you came here to enjoy yourself before moving on to another experience.

I’ve made a conscious decision to choose love and joy now. To fully experience this lifetime. To be grateful for my body which is carrying me through life. To be grateful for those in my life whom I love and who love me. We are in this adventure together, isn’t it incredible? I’m going to enjoy every moment until it’s my time to return to where I came from and be reunited with my loved ones who have already completed their cycle.

Today we released a butterfly in honor of my dad at Falcon Ridge Farms, an event organized by the Hospice where my dad had spent his final weeks. Over one hundred butterflies were released to honor the spirit of those who have passed on and to celebrate their transition. What a perfect commemoration to celebrate a beautiful spirit!


5 Easy Ways to Use Meditation in Your Daily Life

Meditation doesn’t have to be hard. It is quite simple at its very root teaching; calm and quiet the mind so that you may completely experience the present moment. It is an effortless state of thoughtless awareness.

It may sound like a very simple concept however anyone who’s tried meditating knows that it isn’t easy. We are constantly bombarded with thoughts which involve planning for the future and an outcome we cannot control, or ruminating over the past and situations we cannot change.

In addition, we lead busier and more distracted lives than ever before. Many of us are trying to juggle family life with a full time job, checking our email in the evening, maintaining a workout schedule and keeping up with our social media accounts and hobbies on the side. Although these distractions represent living in the twenty first century, every distraction makes it more difficult to focus solely on the present moment.

Here are five easy tools to take with you throughout your day when you need help finding your way back to the present moment.

Deep cleansing breaths. Erratic breathing or short, shallow breaths into the chest send a signal to the body that you’re in danger and trigger the adrenal glands to release cortisol into the bloodstream. Raised levels of cortisol over prolonged periods of time can impair your immune system, decrease brain cells and affect your blood pressure. To reverse this action, immediately stop what you’re doing and focus on the quality of your breath. With eyes open or closed, begin taking slow, full breaths deep into your diaphragm. Hold the breath in for as long as you can and slowly exhale pushing the air out for as long as you can. Repeat this exercise until you’ve noticed the quality of your breath has improved.

Grounding. If you’re not grounded, you may experience feeling scattered, ‘spaced out’, clumsy or forgetful. You may feel as if you’re daydreaming your day away with your head in the clouds. To bring yourself to the here and now, sit up straight in a chair with your feet firmly planted on the ground. Imagine a long cord of gold energy extending down from the base of your spine deep into the ground where it firmly attaches. Allow your scattered thoughts to melt away as you ground yourself to the here and now.

Centering. Are you preoccupied with thoughts focused on the future? Or are your thoughts falling behind you, analyzing a situation that you experienced yesterday. When you catch yourself straying to the future or to the past, call yourself back. Focus on the air temperature and how the slight breeze feels on your skin. Notice any smells or hints of fragrance from the blooming summer flowers. Do you hear any soft sounds around you such as a ticking clock or gentle laughter in the other room? Pay attention with all five of your senses to truly experience this moment.

Gratitude. One of the most powerful ways focus your thoughts on the present moment is to acknowledge everything that you have to be thankful for. Studies in Positive Psychology have found gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Try using a journal to list everything you’re grateful for, express yourself through a blog or, simply just vocalize it to another by saying ‘thank you’. By cultivating a deep appreciation for yourself and others, you automatically shift your focus to the present moment by expressing gratitude for what’s happening in the here and now.

Spiritual Hello. We interact with many people throughout our day but how many of them do we truly see and acknowledge with a spiritual hello? A spiritual hello is making eye contact with another person to acknowledge and validate who they really are. One of the primary causes of unhappiness is social comparison. As we pass strangers on the street, many of us automatically make first impressions about others, quickly assessing and comparing others to ourselves. This is such an automatic human behavior that many of us are not even aware that we are doing it. Instead, choose to lift your gaze, make eye contact and offer a non-judgmental ‘hello’ to people who you pass by throughout your day. By doing so you will exchange positive energy and validate yourself and the other as a whole and complete person in the present moment.

The more you practice incorporating meditation into your daily life, the more natural and easy it will become. Studies have shown that meditation decreases stress, improves quality of life and can even slow the aging process.

But perhaps most importantly of all, meditation quiets the mind so that you may hear the infinite wisdom and guidance being transmitted to you from the Universe. The Universe is always with you, patiently waiting to guide you towards experiencing more love and joy. It isn’t a matter of not being sent guidance, it’s been there all along; rather, it’s a matter of not quieting the mind so that you may hear it. Dedicate yourself to spending more time in a state of thoughtless awareness so that you may recieve all that the Universe intends you to hear.

Find Your Joy

What brings you the most joy? Although you are interconnected to the Universe and subsequently to all living things, you are nonetheless a unique and very special individual. There is no other person like you on this entire planet of more than seven billion people!  And one of the very best ways to celebrate your uniqueness and individuality is to seek out that which brings you the most joy.

Joy can be defined in many different ways. It can be experienced as an act of doing something you love such walking down the beach, skiing down a snow-capped mountain or expressing yourself creatively. It can be experienced while spending time with your loved ones; playing with your children, holding hands with your partner or just enjoying another’s company. Joy can also be found in the act of giving;, while being in service and providing help and assistance to those in need.

Often we feel that we’re not in control of our joy or our emotions in general. We assume that our emotions are a reaction to external situations which are out of our control and thus our emotions are equally out of our control. However as co-creators of our own reality, it is important to acknowledge that we choose our emotions by choosing how we react to external stimuli. We can choose to experience joy, love and contentment regardless of our external circumstances. We can choose to be grateful for this day, and to be alive and present in this moment.

In its simplest form, joy can be experienced in the present moment. When you quiet the incessant and analytical chatter which runs through your mind day in and day out and you let go of your focus on past regrets and release your worry for the future, you make a conscious choice to be truly here, now. You can make a conscious choice to focus on your breath; to feel the warm spring breeze on your skin and smell the blooming flowers and foliage that are all around you. Embrace the perfection that is this very moment. This present moment is where all is well and is the fundamental source of joy.

Joy can also be found by aligning yourself with the flow of the Universe. Positive Psychology defines Flow as “the mental state in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement and enjoyment”. Think back to a time when you were so absorbed in what you were doing that you lost all track of time and any worries or concerns that normally dominate your head-space seemed to drift away. What were you doing that had you so happily preoccupied? Were you playing with your children? Spending time outdoors? Were you enjoying the sunrise with your favourite cup of coffee? Only you will know the answer.

Find your joy! It is your responsibility and no one else’s to discover what makes you the absolute happiest. You must find your joy and revel in it so that you may be your very best self.  Do what you love and celebrate the perfection of who you are. What resonates with you? What places you in the flow? Celebrate your uniqueness. Find your joy.

Reminders for an Old Soul

As an old Soul, you don’t wonder if you have a soul. You know that you are a soul who has a body. You came here with a purpose to be temporarily local in this physical world. And one day in the not too distant future, you will leave your body behind along with the jungles of time and space (thank you, Mike Dooley) and return to the non-physical.

There are days however the stresses of daily life draw you into the physical world, hypnotizing the mind and body to interpret the illusions of reality as stress and chaos.

As an old Soul you are timeless and eternal, gracious and joyful and you are in this world but not of it. Over many lifetimes you have learned countless lessons to become who you are today. You are here now in this very moment to expand and grow even further than ever before.

Reminders for an Old Soul:

  • You came here with a purpose. When you chose this body to live in this lifetime, you came here with a specific spiritual purpose. You knew before entering this body that there would be risks involved; you would love and simultaneously you would experience loss and heartbreak.  You knew you must embrace the ebb and flow of life, yet it was the vast breadth of experiences, the peaks and valleys, that would make coming forth into this physical body so very rewarding.
  • Young souls will meet you on your path. Some of the young souls you meet along your way will be inspired by you and the knowledge you choose to share. It will awaken a part of them inside, causing them to remember something deep within themselves that they hadn’t realized they had forgotten. Other young souls will meet you on your path and will cause you discontent. Driven by fear, resistance or a misguided agenda, they will intentionally block your path. You must remember to feel compassion and understanding for these young souls as they have only forgotten their true spiritual nature.
  • Don’t sweat the small stuff. Sometimes the daily grind can get under your skin which your human mind will interpret as stress. However as a spiritual being having a human experience, you must remind yourself of who you really are. At your truest nature, you inherently know that you are here to love and experience joy. You did not come here to get lost in the jungles of time and space. You came here to act out your part in your own personal movie, starring as yourself as your co-create your best possible life. Carrying out the most exciting adventures, experiencing the love and support of family and meeting lifelong friends along the way, you came forth to enjoy absolutely everything this beautiful life has to offer. You came here to have fun and experience joy

When you feel overwhelmed and stressed by daily living, take a moment to reflect on who you really are. Then, laugh and smile and be grateful for this experience.

Five Signs the Universe is Waiting for You

“The Universe is waiting for you to tell it what you want,” said the psychic. I had wandered into a tarot card reading shop while out walking my dog. I was going through a very difficult time in my life. My dad was very sick with a terminal illness and I felt lost; adrift within the current of life.

As I was being swept away by my emotions and the uncertainty of what the future would hold, the psychic told me exactly what I needed to hear at that very moment. Here are five ways for you to know the Universe is waiting for you to tell it what you want.

1. You are not grounded. You are feeling swept away with life’s events as they move you from place to place and each moment feels fleeting. Rather than being firmly grounded to the Earth (energetically and figuratively), you are adrift. You may experience symptoms such as daydreaming, feeling ‘spaced out’, sick, clumsy or forgetful. Perhaps you lack focus, are irritable or are physically, emotionally or spiritually drained. You carelessly move through your day-to-day life as external experiences seem to happen to you, without any seeming order or control. You are reacting to what’s happened rather than being present to what is.

2. You are harboring negative emotions. The body is governed by emotions, which are a very powerful tool that provides awareness of how we are reacting to each moment. The Spirit or soul of the body is made up of pure positive energy and is completely accepting and non-judgmental of every moment. The Spirit understands there is an ebb and flow to life and not every moment is a positive one. The ebb (or perceived negative points in life) are a gift for us to learn from, so that we may appreciate the flow (or positive parts of life). The Spirit does not experience negative emotions in response to the ebb as it is only capable of expressing love and acceptance. If you are continuously harboring negative emotions, your mind is ruling your heart and is drowning out the voice of your Spirit.

3. You are in resistance to what is. Negative emotions such as fear, anger and resentment are a symptom of resistance to the present moment. Fear signifies we are focused on the future and are fearful of the potential of experiencing pain; physical, emotional or spiritual. Anger and resentment signify a preoccupation of the past; we are angry or resentful of a past experience that happened to us. If you are focusing on the future or the past, you are not living in the present moment. Spirit only resides in the present moment.

4. You feel lost. You are in a constant state of uncertainty and confusion, questioning which direction to take. Divine interventions and meaningful coincidences will pass you by undiscovered. The Universe is on your side and is encouraging you to course-correct in every moment, however it all goes by unnoticed. You are unaware of your spiritual purpose and the path to find it is hazy and unclear. You grasp blindly around you seeking answers, even though each and every answer you seek is already inside of you.

5. You are indecisive. You are constantly faced with indecision, unsure of which step to take next and which route to follow. You blindly ask your friends and family for their advice, leaning on them to help you make your own decisions. You constantly finding forks in the road along your path and are never sure which direction to take. Wherever you are, you feel as if there’s somewhere else you need to be, however you can’t figure out exactly where that is. You do not recognize the importance of the journey nor find enjoyment in discovering your spiritual path.
